When I first started the Senior Project class, I did not expect this workload. I was aware that it was an important class, but the number of assignments caught me by surprise. The paper met my expectations, but the attention to detail when writing research papers was something that I did not expect or experience. The professionalism and formality were other things that were different from the rest of my school experience. As a high schooler, I wasn't used to all these waivers and forms for a project.
My biggest problem when researching and writing the paper was confirming sources and accurately describing the disease and its symptoms. It was difficult to research such a complex idea since many different websites report conflicting facts. The greatest resource that helped me overcome this problem was Google and just hours of carefully reading medical articles one after the other. I also found keeping a dictionary handy because of the complexity of the scientific terms that these medical articles are filled with.
The most interesting and surprising information I learned in my research was that even though this brain disease has been around for years, they still cannot diagnose while a patient is alive. Therefore, they have to resort to reading a patient’s symptoms to be able to diagnose.
I learned that the start of working or doing a task is hard, but once you start, especially when it comes to writing the paper, you catch on easily and words start to just roll off your tongue with ease. This was beneficial to me because I know how to fight through the first stage of studying and know that it will become easy. As I head into college, this is especially good because I can now study more efficiently.
I can continue to work on this project if I conducted research with respected professors in college, and began to come to conclusions myself. I can also reach out to helmet companies and propose my idea in hopes that they could test it out and take key ideas into their manufacturing.
It taught me that Islam values the life of a human being in ways that most Non-Muslims and even Muslims don’t realize. Most Non-Muslims point to threatening verses in the Qur’an when arguing against Islam, but they don’t realize that the reward that saving a single life is as if someone saved all of humanity. The same is applied to murder: the murder of a single life is equivalent to the murder of all of humanity. This concept amazed me and opened my eyes to the truth even more.
Make sure you choose something you are passionate about and that can actually be solved. Don’t choose a topic that requires powers out of your reach to solve. Also, don’t procrastinate because you will just end up sloppily finishing the assignment. The sloppier your assignments and paper are, the harder it is to make a product/event.
I would give myself an A. I chose this grade because I feel like my project is complete all around. Even though I may have procrastinated and turned assignments in late, I still made sure that they were of excellent quality. My research paper was my favorite and most complete assignment I completed in this course. I put a lot of effort into the research and into making it understandable to the average judge.
